The Town of Maiden is a small community of approximately 3,200 residents located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. Residents enjoy a close proximity to the Hickory and Charlotte Metro Areas. These areas provide a wide range of shopping, restaurants, recreation, and tourist activities. The IT Department consists of one full time staff member who oversees all technologies in the use at the Town. The position also provides helpdesk and trouble resolution functions.
The Town Council was interested in providing free wireless Internet access for its constituents for the purpose of providing basic connectivity especially for those without the economic means of purchasing service for themselves or their children. “The goal is to ultimately have coverage throughout the Town limits,” said Steve Butler, IT Director for the Town of Maiden. A request for proposal was issued to provide a staged implementation building off the existing Cisco Meraki wireless infrastructure. The initial project targeted the Town’s core downtown and Municipal Park areas. “Based on the submissions,” Steve says, “we selected HitsTech for their pricing and their reputation for successful wireless projects within other local agencies in North Carolina.”
HitsTech provided the engineering and project management duties on the project. They also provided the technicians to mount the equipment around the Town, working with the Town electrical crews. The overall deployment took 6 weeks as work progressed around the availability of the electrical department’s schedules. Total, 126 Meraki access points were placed strategically though the Town to provide coverage in Maiden’s core downtown and park.
During the Town’s Fall Festival the network handled up to 350 simultaneous users without disruption. HitsTech has continued to provide support as needed to tune and troubleshoot the system. “The solution has actually required very little work after its initial installation and has gotten positive reviews from both our constituents as well as Council,” remarked Steve Butler. “The cloud based management is a perfect platform to allow us, with little staff, the ability to run a very large wireless network without being overwhelmed. When the Town is ready to expand beyond the current wireless footprint we will no doubt continue to look to Cisco Meraki and HitsTech to provide a stable and easy to manage wireless deployment.”
